Arts & Craft Style Kitchen Renovations
The Arts and Crafts movement started around 1890 in England, and its appeal has stood the test of time. Initially a protest of mass produced things and stuffy, elaborate Victorian design, its call to heed a simpler aesthetic and fine craftsmanship resonates with homeowners now. Common things which represent an Arts and Crafts tradition are handcrafted stained glass, straightforward trims, ceramic tiles, earthenware, metalworks and furniture.
The Arts and Crafts (also called Craftsman) kitchen was initially designed around simple aspects of nature, incorporating natural lighting along with wood floors and countertops. These days, a kitchen mightn’t use a wood-burning stove, but the minimalist design principles still apply.
Crafts and Arts kitchens typically characteristic cabinetry that goes as high as the ceiling, removing clutter and leaving room for loads of storage. Upper cabinets with leaded or stained glass doors are popular for this style, as are clear doors designed to show off a collection of things including teapots, salt-and-pepper shakers or bowls. Use decorative accessories with an Arts and Crafts inspiration. For accent pieces, excellent picks are made by use artisanal things in subtle, vibrant tones; pottery and stained glass. Open shelving might give an updated Craftsman feel, while polished oak floorings can complement an Arts and Crafts kitchen’s timeless appeal to a kitchen. Arts and Crafts design seeks to return to excellent craftsmanship and create a balanced environment. This precious fashion shows a natural fit for a kitchen that is not cool, casual and refined.
Pick earthy tones for the walls, including beige, taupe and mint green. Paint baseboards and other trim with a creamy white color. The substances vary from tiles to wood designs that are hard, although kitchen counter selections are often muted colors.
Accessories are kept to a minimum in a Craftsman kitchen, but they’re often blatantly set to create a specific effect, when they can be included. For example, an overhead light made from tinted orange glass to give a pop of color to the room might accents an otherwise neutral wood island. It’s also common for shelving units to be added to a Craftsman kitchen and reserved specially for showcasing a collection of cookbooks. Arts and Crafts kitchens are identified by simple lines, solid construction, and very little excessive ornamentation. The style is often connected with Mission, Shaker, and Craftsman designs, although there are some historical differences between them.
The wholesome feel of the movement is a natural fit for a kitchen that is refined, casual and not cool. Nature is the one overarching influence for this design style, the color palette is muted, moderate tones: taupes, the browns, greens, oranges, reds and blues you’d see in nature. Tiles or stained-glass panels that depict things from the outdoors like flowers, grapevines, fruits, leaves, insects and butterflies are delightful and keep with the principles of the style.
You can attain an Arts and Crafts look with small additions or major changes in your kitchen. Add rich wood trim. Large crown molding, broad wainscoting or a bold plate rail can produce immediate effect. Wood, preferably wide trim in medium to dark tones, stands out as the most fundamental component you’ll be able to include to give your kitchen an Arts and Crafts vibe. Oak, teak and mahogany were the most popular kinds used in the original movement, if your kitchen is on the small side and will be overpowered by this type of daring statement, wood painted white or off white may be a better alternative.
Install tiles with character. Try a backsplash of subway tiles, either bordered with a series of unique emphasis tiles and painted with simple or a natural motif. Also look for tiles reminiscent of the dominant artisans of the period: Ernest Batchelder’s world-toned designs from the early 20th century are some of the most coveted ceramic tiles approximately. Replicas are also widely accessible, although you can nevertheless buy originals.
Pick natural flooring and countertops. For flooring, consider travertine, limestone, slate or marble; on counters, believe granite, soapstone or slate. Try to find a flat, flowing pattern reminiscent of water rather than speckles or flecks. A countertop panel of marble is nice because it remains cold for rolling out dough, if you’re a pastry chef or baking buff; marble is too soft, however, for use through the kitchen.
Copper and wrought iron are signature metals for the Arts and Crafts look. Options include a hand-forged sink, wall sconces, cabinet pulls, or, for a showstopper, a big oven hood.
Keep in mind that natural light stays the greatest method to play up the tonal mood you create with an Arts and Crafts kitchen and bring out patterns, subtle shades and textures. Additionally, it lightens the effect of wide swaths of dark wood. If your present kitchen is on the side that is dim, consider budgeting for a comprehensive bank of windows over the sink or even a skylight.
